Zeche Carl

Travel writer Christine Neder occasionally writes some blog posts for us about her travels. Here is the English version of her trip to Essen in Germany.

My host, Gert, offers not only food in his apartment, but is also committed to culture. Occasionally on Sundays, he offers tours through Zeche Carl. Luckily for me, I happened to be staying with him on a Sunday night and so could experience one of his guided tours.

As a Bavarian this was something special for me and also something totally new. I’d no idea what was in a Malakow tower or could imagine how the workers supplied the coking plant but did so while working in fresh air and daylight. This was something different from the process in Berlin where canaries were brought down the mine and their death signalled the presence of toxic gasses.

In the year of my birth, 1985, the Zeche was registered on Essen city monuments list. It is now also a socio-cultural centre where you can drink a delicious cappuccino as well as attend readings or concerts.

Definitely worth a visit.
